When Parker first watched Endless Summer II, one scene burned itself into his memory: perfect waves, sunlit skies, and a legendary stop in Tamarindo, Costa Rica, to visit Robert August. Years later, that dream turned into reality when he booked a trip to Witch\u2019s Rock Surf Camp with his dad, Robert. Now, three trips later \u2013 with another already on the books for this October \u2013 Parker is a familiar face around camp, chasing waves, growth, and connection.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

This July, Parker returned to Witch\u2019s Rock Surf Camp with his dad and cousin, Alex, joining the intermediate surf program. For Robert, this was his second visit to Tamarindo and his first surf trip in a while. \u201cIt\u2019s not like riding a bike, trust me,\u201d he laughed, reflecting on how long it had been since he regularly surfed the Southern California coast.<\/p>

Parker\u2019s journey, like many, wasn\u2019t love at first wipeout. \u201cI think I was 14 the first time I stood on a board \u2013 visiting my dad in Santa Barbara. I didn\u2019t like it at first,\u201d he admitted. \u201cBut it slowly grew on me. Especially when I moved to Orange County for college\u2026 surfing became my escape.\u201d

That sense of escape is something both father and son cherish. \u201cSurfing now is my way to unplug,\u201d Parker said. \u201cTo get away from the noise, be present, and reconnect with nature.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Their search for quality time, great waves, and surf community led them to Witch\u2019s Rock Surf Camp.

\u201cWe\u2019d seen the spot in the movie, and I looked it up,\u201d said Parker. \u201cWitch\u2019s Rock looked like it had everything \u2013 a real surf setup, not just a hotel on the beach. Once we came, we were hooked.\u201d

For Parker and Robert, WRSC isn\u2019t just about catching waves \u2013 it\u2019s about showing up and being taken care of, from sunrise surf trips to sunset beers. \u201cThis whole operation is made for surfers,\u201d Parker said. \u201cThey wax your board, load the van, take you on a boat to the next surf spot, coach you with real feedback, and you come back to a hot breakfast and a room steps from the sand where you can relax. All you need to do is be present.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Both Parker and Robert trained under Coach Oscar Valverde, who quickly became a favorite.<\/p>

\u201cHe doesn\u2019t sugarcoat things,\u201d Parker said. \u201cHe tells you exactly where you\u2019re getting stuck, and his technical advice just clicks. My goal this trip was to improve my left and wave selection \u2013 Oscar helped me break it down step by step.\u201d<\/p>

Robert agreed. \u201cBeing grounded in the moment is essential. Oscar reminds you that your energy has to match the wave. You need to be calm before the wave. That\u2019s the part I love \u2013 surfing becomes more than a sport; it\u2019s a connection.\u201d<\/p>

They also loved the video coaching sessions, where guests gather to review surf footage captured by WRSC\u2019s media team. \u201cI\u2019m a tech guy,\u201d Parker laughed. \u201cIf it\u2019s not on camera, it didn\u2019t happen. But seriously, watching yourself surf and reviewing it with your coach is a game-changer.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

It wasn\u2019t just the waves that kept them coming back \u2013 it was the people.<\/p>

\u201cYou meet families, solo travelers, and locals,\u201d said Parker. \u201cEveryone\u2019s here to surf, connect, and share this beautiful place. We did trivia night, karaoke \u2013 probably the first time I have sung and danced with my cousin since a family wedding this past fall.\u201d<\/p>

Whether you\u2019re chatting over coffee at Eat at Joe\u2019s or cheering on someone\u2019s first green wave, the vibe is welcoming and electric. \u201cEvery coach, every staff member is happy to be here,\u201d Parker added. \u201cThe whole place runs on pura vida energy.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Parker and Robert debated whether to start with the beginner group after years off the board. Ultimately, they went for the intermediate program<\/a> \u2013 and never looked back.<\/p>

\u201cIf you\u2019ve surfed before, know how to pop up, paddle out, and read waves \u2013 this is your group,\u201d Parker explained. \u201cAnd if you\u2019re not sure? The team here will guide you. You can always adjust.\u201d<\/p>

What makes WRSC\u2019s intermediate program special is its variety of breaks \u2013 from boat-accessed spots to early van missions \u2013 and its world-class coaching. \u201cThey don\u2019t just tell you what to do, they help you feel the wave,\u201d said Robert. \u201cIt\u2019s the difference between just riding and actually surfing.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

For Parker, WRSC isn\u2019t just a surf destination \u2013 it\u2019s part of his life now. \u201cEvery time I come, I leave as a better surfer. And a better person.\u201d<\/p>

His advice to anyone considering the trip? \u201cDon\u2019t just rent a board and go out. Come to a camp like this. If you\u2019re serious about surfing \u2013 and about reconnecting with yourself or the people you love \u2013 this is the place.\u201d<\/p>

And with that, Parker is already counting down the days to October.<\/p>
